Recruitment Storm Pressurizes Ottawa To Review Temporary Foreign Worker Program
In the wake of a recruitment hullabaloo in the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC), Ottawa has proclaimed that it will carry-out an appraisal of its program involving Temporary Foreign Workers. The said program invited much censure sometime back; post nearly 200 work visas were made available to the miners from China. Reportedly, those miners were offered visas to work in the BC for a Canada-based firm.
Some detractors raised a hue and cry saying that, prior to exploring overseas options, the Canadian firm may not have made the needed attempts to recruit citizens or permanent residents of the Maple Country. With a view to secure a sizeable section of the temporary work visas, evidence of such attempts is mandatory.
In this particular case, the Canadian firm mentioned expertise related to Chinese language as a key factor for recruitment. Question has been raised over the said prerequisite—the reason being the same could have been employed with a view to keep out the nationals of Canada from work. Talking about this, an involved person was quoted as saying that several people are unhappy that the necessary attempts were not made to hire or duly offer training to those people of Canada who may have been interested in the given work.
It needs to be mentioned here that the Labour Congress besides many unions of Canada–such as those for the steelworkers & miners in British Columbia (BC)–have strongly expressed their backing for the appraisal.
